End of French and Indian War (Seven Years' War)
October 7, 1763
Proclamation Line forbids settlement west of Appalachian Mountains to prevent clashes between the colonists and Native Americans. 10,000 British troops are stationed in the colonies to enforce compliance.
April 5, 1764
Sugar Act imposes taxes on sugar and molasses and other items imported to the colonies through trade with Africa and the West Indies. Prompts the first Nonimportation movement and a boycott of British goods in New England.
September 1, 1764
Currency Act prohibits the printing of currency by the colonial government.
March 22, 1765
Stamp Act imposes taxes on printed material. The colonists boycott.
March 24, 1765
Quartering Acts require colonists to house British troops.
